Default sports domains

Is it TM infringment if you register your favorite sports team's domain with a few words or numbers added in?

I would think it depended on how significantly you changed the trademarked name.

And even then I think it would be subject to judgment if it went to court.

That's a good question. It makes me think of when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were buying up all the domain names that had to do with their children. I do know that when you are in the public eye, anything goes, but I never thought about infringement in terms of companies...etc....

Additional info on the Angelina Jolie baby domain name rush can be found here….apparently she was unable to get a hold of the .biz and .us.

Quote:
Domain Works, June 1, 2006: Within hours after giving birth, highly-publicized celebrity Angelina Jolie had already registered the <shilohjoliepitt.com> and <shilohnouveljoliepitt.com> domain names for her newborn daughter. Jolie also registered domain names containing the gTLDs “.org,” “.net” and “.info.” While such registration seems quite hasty, it turned out to be worthwhile, for soon after Jolie registered these domain names, someone else had snatched up the same domain names with the “.biz” and “.us” extensions. The article notes that Brad Pitt is not listed in the WHOIS information, so if they ever divorce, Jolie would probably get custody of the domain names. Link to Full Story

This is a generic question asked to answer a specific query. I think you should give an exmaple for better understanding.

If it has the name of a major league team in it and contains content about that sport, you WILL be pursued in court if you are found out. These names are trademarked and copyrighted by the major league teams and they do not look kindly on misuse.

Some teams may have significant nicknames that could be tried.

But if they're significant enough to be useful in a domain name, they're probably going to draw legal heat, too.

I believe the Yankees even have the term "Bronx Bombers" protected. Oh well
