Default When Typos Make Sense

This will apply to those who have heard of or visited youtube.com....

Is it just me or do you sometimes get the urge to type: utube.com?

By the way, if you haven't made that typo, it takes you to the Universal Tube & Rollfoam Equipment Corporation.......very, very different.

Yes, 'utube' makes sense too, but rather than caving to the misspellers of the world, I would rather see the web site owner put the misspellings in their keywords so that those who search on the wrong spelling will find the site anyway.

I first heard of You Tube on TV. I've never been tempted to misspell it.

I agree, let's keep the language intact.

I've noticed a lot of sites out there that are using mis-spelled or gramatically incorrect site names 'Addicting' instead of addictive, for example.

It drives me insane! I had my nephew telling me 'but this is right, I saw it spelled that way on the internet' - he's 12. He should know by now that most people on the kinds of sites he frequents can't spell

I have read that sometimes typos are a way of driving traffic to a site, sort of a strategy to make one browse more and more sites.

So I assume the strategy is to claim domain names with predictable typos similar to your site, and then when someone goes to the typo sites, have them redirected to the correct site?

Yes. Some businesses will get typos in domains similar to other sites and try to sponge traffic off. As a user, though, how likely are you to look at another site which is typically not at all what you were looking for?
