Default Same domain, different extension

Does anyone here register domains with multiple extensions, ie the same domain as .com, .net, .info etc

Is this a good idea to deter competition from registering the same domain as you?

Yes i have. That way you own all the possible domains and like you said, no one will come along and build a .net alongside your .com of the same name. It can be very annoying when this happens as people tend to think its the same website.

Thought so Homer, thanks for the quick reply.
The only problem is money, this can be an expensive exercise

i dont do this. it just ends up costing you double or triple or more than one domain.
I would rather register more domains for different sites than lots of domains for one site.

Well it does sound like it could make you some money. Especially if it's a name that is very popular and a lot of people want it. If it's not then what's the point? You'll just end up losing money.

If you do register the same name with different extensions, do you put a link on the other addresses to your main site?

Would that cost more money?

I agree that it can be costly. I wouldnt even bother to buy up all the sites if I was able to purchase the extension ".com." I can't tell you how automatic it is for me to type in ".com" at the end of all sites.
